How We Experience The World Is Important (Revisited)

How we see the world impacts how we feel, think, perceive things, and even our relationships. Many of our worldviews were shaped over the years by our life experiences. These experiences can span over time. For example, from our first days of kindergarten to our first high school crushes. It is collected moments over many years that influence views of people and feelings from those relationships.  I believe it to be essential for people to uncover deep meanings to their experiences in the world. These experiences create opportunities for healing and for hope as old self stories are rewritten and new ones are imagined. My experiences as the oldest of four girls shaped my parenting of my two sons. I tend to correct my children's behavior using examples with metaphorical language and many narratives to explain how they can improve their behaviors. I do this because of my experiences from mothering my siblings. My brain autopilots to what happened in the past and projects to the curren...

Mourning Messages

After attending a funeral of a loved one, my mind started linking grieving to positive thinking phenomena. How can a positive mindset help with the grieving process? Available evidence suggests that it is indeed possible for the bereaved to enhance their positive emotions. Two approaches for igniting positive emotions are becoming involved in positive activities and concentrating on what matters now. Become Involved in Positive Activities Many studies have shown that interacting in activities that engage one’s interests is very effective in enhancing positive emotions. Cognitive and behavioral interventions for depression have often relied on this approach. Being involved in an engaging activity can break the grip of negative thoughts, at least temporarily. Some engaging activities include shopping, attending a sporting event with a friend, taking your dog for a walk, and visiting the library. Concentrating on What Matters Now This approach to enhancing positive emotions asks mourners ...

Designing a Healthy Lifestyle

Make Health and Self-Care Priority Overworking and never stopping to assess your mental and physical health can be detrimental. Many of us fail to prioritize our health and self-care. Work demands and family obligations compete with one’s tendency to prioritize the needs of others first. Making unhealthy lifestyle choices can increase stress levels which are detrimental to already stressful lives. Adopting a healthier lifestyle can significantly reduce premature mortality and increase longevity for all adults in the United States. Living a Cheerier Life

We need to get out of life more than we do. Improving our quality of life starts with taking control of our purpose. Let's attempt to survive, manage, and regulate our daily stressors. Balance is needed. If we go too far off the deep end into negative thoughts and feelings, depression and anxiety take effect.  Part of living a cheerier life is to let go of a limited outlook on being happy. Repeatedly, we permit our minds to believe we do not deserve joy. Yes, we are our own sabotages. As a man/woman, think it is how he/she will act accordingly. It is a thought-out, rehearsed behavior of replacing negative thoughts with positive thoughts. Therefore, engaging in intentional activities to become significantly happier is essential. I am of the age where I desire to be at peace, loved, and grateful. This whole notion of always having a happy belief system provides me with an enormous source of stability. Yes, I am on a quest to live a balanced lifestyle. An existence that provides more ...

Protecting Our Energy!

We have a constant worry about the mortgage or rent, a healthy body, children, marriage, saving money, spending money, taking trips, and just life events each day. In today’s world, stress is everywhere. Whether it comes from social media, work, school, relationships, or family, we are constantly attacked with information and demands. This constant onslaught of incitements makes it tough to focus on anything else. Hence, when we don’t take time to relax and unwind, it often results in burnout and exhaustion. But most often, we get caught up in the go-go-go of everyday life and forget to check in with ourselves. As a result, we miss the life that is happening right now. If we spend our days thinking about all the things, we don’t like about ourselves or our lives, or our daily stresses, we’ll never feel peaceful. Modern psychology has demonstrated that people are more sensitive to negative experiences. I want you to know that a relaxed and calm outlook can help you navigate life’s often...

Living Thankful 365 Days

As we near the end of 2022, let us reflect on living a thankful life 365 days a year. We can start now to prepare our hearts and minds for living thankful and with gratitude in 2023. Being grateful reminds us of what is important in our lives. It’s difficult to grumble about the little things when you give thanks that your loved ones are alive and healthy. It’s hard to get stressed out over paying bills when you are grateful there is a roof over your head. In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual accepts, either tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people recognize the goodness in their lives. People usually trust that the source of that goodness lies at least partially outside themselves. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships. This prayer, written...
