How We Experience The World Is Important (Revisited)
How we see the world impacts how we feel, think, perceive things, and even our relationships. Many of our worldviews were shaped over the years by our life experiences. These experiences can span over time. For example, from our first days of kindergarten to our first high school crushes. It is collected moments over many years that influence views of people and feelings from those relationships.
I believe it to be essential for people to uncover deep meanings to their experiences in the world. These experiences create opportunities for healing and for hope as old self stories are rewritten and new ones are imagined. My experiences as the oldest of four girls shaped my parenting of my two sons. I tend to correct my children's behavior using examples with metaphorical language and many narratives to explain how they can improve their behaviors. I do this because of my experiences from mothering my siblings. My brain autopilots to what happened in the past and projects to the current situations. Understanding how our past influences our present is extremely important. Our particular narrative is storytelling that gives shape to our experiences.
To embrace living happier, we must understand how our past experiences brought us to our current selves. Pulling back the layers of our lives to be authentic is a necessary step to moving forward in this new way of living. Moreover, the ability to reconstruct memories over time allows for meanings to change, evolve, and have relevance throughout (Kotre 1996).

DeleteThis is a great reflection on how our past experiences shape our current and future actions. In thinking about you being the oldest and how it shaped your experience as a parent, I would like to extend a bit. As Generation X, growing up very independent and usually solving problems without the help of our parents, what is the effect on our children? Positive or negative? Maybe Gen X wanted to provide more for their offspring than what they experienced. In that case, there had to be a balance between reflecting mindsets of "This is how I learned work ethic and it worked for me," and "I don't want you to experience the hardships that I had, so let me HELP you." Both can be detrimental if taken to extremes. There's definitely no guide to it all, but in the end as you stated, we must understand the layers. understand ourselves, protect our mental health, and understand how to support the mental health of our loved ones.
