Mourning Messages
After attending a funeral of a loved one, my mind started linking grieving to positive thinking phenomena. How can a positive mindset help with the grieving process? Available evidence suggests that it is indeed possible for the bereaved to enhance their positive emotions. Two approaches for igniting positive emotions are becoming involved in positive activities and concentrating on what matters now.
Become Involved in Positive Activities
Many studies have shown that interacting in activities that engage one’s interests is very effective in enhancing positive emotions. Cognitive and behavioral interventions for depression have often relied on this approach. Being involved in an engaging activity can break the grip of negative thoughts, at least temporarily. Some engaging activities include shopping, attending a sporting event with a friend, taking your dog for a walk, and visiting the library.
Concentrating on What Matters Now
This approach to enhancing positive emotions asks mourners to consider what matters at this point in life. Also, finding something relevant to life at this point and using it to create a sense of clarity and focus to increase awareness of what matters now as a way of not ruminating over death and loss.
The research shows that a little increase in positive emotions can produce favorable effects. The more one engages in these practices, the more positive emotions will continue to flow. This can result in an upward spiral of well-being characterized by better relationships within the family, a greater feeling of connection with extended family and friends, and a better appreciation for what is significant.
Grief can teach us many things. Many positive things can help during our time of losing loved ones. Two positives would be empathy and understanding because we can be more caring to others.
